The First International Festival of Painting Cagnes-sur-Mer (Satou Art Museum, April 8-July 15) is held. The exhibition features five Korean artists including Kim Youngjoo, Park Seo-Bo, Suh Seok, Chung Changsup and Cho Yongik.
The Third Origin Fine Arts Association Exhibition (Seoul Press Center, April 10-16) is held. The exhibition features eight artists including Kim Sooik, Suh Seungwon, Shin Kiock, Lee Sangrak, Lee Seungjio, Lee Changbae, Choi Myoungyoung and Ham Jongseop.

Lee Ufan, who won the Japanese Bijutsu Shuppan-Sha’s art criticism contest with his essay “From Object to Being”.
The attempt to screen The Meaning of 1/24 Second, an experimental film directed by Kim Kulim with Jung Kangja and Chung Chanseung assisting with the filming, at the Academy Theater Music Hall, is canceled. On the same day, Kim Kulim and Jung Kangja’s happening, Untitled, is performed in its place.

Lee Hangsung organizes the Contemporary Printing Arts Exhibition for Decade (Sinseong Dabang (Cafe) and Chang-il Dabang (Cafe), Seoul, August 5-30, 1969). The exhibition features forty-three artists including Kang Whansup, Kim Duwhan, Kim Sanghyu, Kim Sunbae, Kim Youngjoo, Kim Woojo, Kim Yunshin, Kim Choungza, Kim Chonghak, Lee Hangsung, Moon Woosik, Min Eunsik, Park Mansun, Park Sungsam, Park Youngsung, Park Hyeonsu, Bae Yoong, Song Burnsoo, Ahn Yeongmuk, Oh Changseong, Yoo Kangyul, Yu Hyosik, Youn Myeungro, Lee Kyuho, Lee Myeongseon, Rhee Sangwooc, Lee Seungil, Lee Yangbok, Lee Yonggil, Jeon Sangbeom, Chung Kyu, Jeong Junho, Cha Hyeok, Cheon Byongkun, Choi Kyusang, Choi Dukhyu, Choi Youngrim, Choi Yunjae, Choi Jonghye, Han Jinhae, Hong Won and Hwang Chuui.
On August 23, a presidential decree establishes the organizational structure of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. On September 15, Kim Imryong assumes office as its first director.
The Korean Export Design Center launches the professional design magazine Gyegan Dijain (Design Quarterly). The main editor is Lee Soonsuk, Yoo Geunjun provides editorial guidance, and Chung Shihwa serves as editor. A total of four issues were published by December 1969.

The Korean Avant Garde Association (AG) is formed. AG is formed by Kwak Hoon, Kim Kulim, Kim Dongkyu, Kim Tchahsup, Kim Han, Park Suk-won, Park Chongbae, Suh Seungwon, Song Burnsoo, Shin Hakchul, Shim Moon-seup, Lee Kun-Yong, Lee Seungjio, Lee Seungtaek, Cho Sungmook, Choi Myoungyoung, and Ha Chonghyun together with art critics Kim Inhwan, Oh Kwang-su, and Lee Yil. They published a total of four issues of the association’s journal AG, featuring member’s articles and introducing the latest art trends. The first issue of AG presents texts by Lee Yil's "Theory of Avant-Garde Art", Park Chongbae's "Trends in Contemporary American Sculpture", Choi Myoungyoung's "A New Aesthetic Consciousness and Its Formative Framework", Kim Tchahsup, Kim Han's "The Outdoor Works Exhibition", Oh Kwang-su's "The Artistic Trajectory of Marcel Duchamp", Guido Ballo's "Lucio Fontana and Spatialism", Lucio Fontana's "Technical Manifesto of Spatialism", and Michel Ragon's "The Birth of New Art".
The First Seoul International Contemporary Music Festival (National Theater of Korea, Seoul, September 5-6) is held. The happening, Sex on the Piano, directed by Paik Nam June and Kim Kulim and performed by Chung Chanseung and Cha Myeonghui, is performed.
The Tenth Sao Paulo Art Biennial (Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion, São Paulo, Brazil, September 27-December 3) is held. The exhibition features eighteen Korean artists including Quac Insik, Kim Chanshik, Min Kyoungkap, Park Suk-won, Sohn Dongchin, Ahn Dongsook,, Yun Hyongkeun, Lee Kyusun, Lee Soojai, Lee Ufan, Lee Chonghyock, Lim Sangchin, Chun Kyungja, Choi Kiwon, Choi Manlin, Choi Myoungyoung, Choi Euisoon and Ha Indoo. Kim Sechoong serves as the commissioner for Korean artists.

The Sixth Paris Biennal (Musée d'art Moderne de Paris, October 2-November 2) is held. The exhibition features three korean artists including Suh Seungwon, Youn Myeungro and Lee Seungtaek participate. Cho Yongik serves as the commissioner for korean artists.
The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art officially opens on October 20, 1969, in its annex within Gyeongbokgung Palace (the former Government-General of Korea Museum of Art). The inaugural Advisory Committee is organized, consisting of fifteen members: Kim Eunho, Lee Sangbeom, and Chang Woosoung (Oriental Painting); Kim Youngjoo, Kim Insoong, To Sangbong, Park Kosuk, Park Seo-Bo, and Lee Joon (Western Painting); Kim Kyongseung and Kim Sechoong (Sculpture); Lee Soonsuk (Craft); Son Jaehyeong (Calligraphy); Bae Gilsoon (Architecture); and Lee Gyeongmo (Photography).
The Eighteenth National Art Exhibition (Gukjeon) (National Museum of Modern Art (now MMCA), October 20-November 20) is held at the former Government-General Art Museum of Joseon building within the grounds of Gyeongbokgung Palace. Park Kiloung's Traces. White F-75 wins the Presidential Award. Cho Chunghyun's Bowl receives the Prime Minister's Award and Park Suk-won's Universe Misery receives the Speaker of the National Assembly Award.
Ahead of its opening, the founding exhibition of the Reality Group [Hyeonsil dongin] is canceled due to a report submitted by Seoul National University (SNU) and obstruction by the authorities. The Reality Group is formed by Oh Kyunghwan, Oh Yoon, and Lim Setaek, SNU College of Fine Arts students, championing national aesthetics and realism. The intent of the exhibition’s manifesto “The Reality Group's First Manifesto” (written by Kim Jiha and edited by Kim Yoon-Soo) that puts forth “art as a reflection of reality” is carried over into Minjung art through Oh Yoon, who is a member of the group Reality and Utterance [Hyeonsilgwa bareon] in the 1980s.

The First Korean Contemporary Ceramics Association Exhibition (U.S. Cultural Center, Seoul, December 2-9) is held. The exhibition features eighteen artists including Kye Gyeonggae, Kim Byeongho, Noh Sunja, Park Gyeongsuk Lee Sungkuen, Lee Okbae, Lee Illo, Lee Junhui, Lim Gyeongu, Yu Byeongho, Jo Sukhui, Jeong Bongsuk, Jeong Seonbong, Han Bongrim, Han Eunhui, Han Honggon, Oh Ilhwan and Shin Sangho.

Kim Bokyoung, Lee Kun-Yong, and others hold the first research meeting to launch the Space and Time Group (ST). In March 1970, the second research meeting is attended by Kim Munja, Kim Bokyoung, Park Wonjun, Shin Sunghy, Yeo Un, and Han Jeongmun, and an open seminar on contemporary art is held.
