The Cheongju Craft Biennale is an international multidisciplinary art event that encompasses all areas of crafts, including ceramics, wood lacquerware, textile, and metalwork, and is held every two years in the fall. The first Cheongju International Craft Biennale was held from September 30 through October 31, 1999 at the Cheongju Arts Center under the theme of “Hands of Harmony” (Director Jang Dong-gwang). Since 2011, a cultural space converted from a former tobacco manufacturing warehouse began to be used as the venue for the biennale. Since the tenth edition in 2017, the biennale was remade the Cheongju Craft Biennale. The biennale consists of the main exhibition, special exhibition, exhibition at an invited country’s pavilion, and the Cheongju International Craft Competition as well as various academic workshops and educational and hands-on activity events. The Cheongju city has been organizing the Cheongju Craft Biennale since 1997, recognizing that craft is a significant field encompassing both art and industry. The Cheongju Craft Biennale Organizing Committee is chaired by the mayor of Cheongju and vice-chaired by the vice mayor. In 2015, Alain de Botton was invited as the artistic director of a special exhibition, which attracted much attention from the public and was a huge success. At the closing ceremony of the twelfth edition in 2021, Cheongju was declared as the “craft city.” Cheonju is seeking to join the Crafts and Folk Art field of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. As of the thirteenth edition in 2023, the Cheongju Craft Biennale has grown to become one of the largest and most prestigious craft biennales in the world with more than 3,000 artists participating from over sixty countries and 300,000 visitors.
